Recraft is an AI design studio built around a simple idea: generated visuals should be useful after the generation step, not just attractive inside a gallery. It creates raster images and editable SVG vectors, while also offering image editing, mockups, upscaling, background removal, brand-oriented styling and integrations with design tools. Its current model lineup includes Recraft V4.1 and V4.1 Vector variants, with higher-resolution Pro versions for larger production assets.

Why Recraft Is Different From a Typical AI Image Generator

Most image generators are judged primarily on the picture they produce. Recraft is trying to solve a slightly different problem: helping a designer get from an idea to a usable asset.

That distinction matters when the deliverable is a logo concept, icon family, packaging graphic, illustration system, product mockup or marketing visual. Recraft can generate raster imagery, but its vector models can also produce SVG artwork with editable paths. Its vectorization tools can turn suitable raster images into editable SVGs, while the newer Vector Editor lets users adjust anchor points, curves, colors and duplicated elements without exporting the work first.

The result is a workflow that sits somewhere between an AI image generator and a lightweight design environment. You can start with a prompt, refine the result, edit the underlying vector artwork, and then move the asset into another application when needed.

That is a more specific proposition than simply “make an image with AI,” and it explains why Recraft tends to appeal most strongly to designers, marketers and brand-focused teams.

From Prompt to Production Asset

The basic workflow is straightforward. Recraft Studio provides a project-based canvas where users can create an image, edit it and export the result. The official quick-start documentation describes the process as creating an account, opening a project, generating an image, making an edit and exporting the result.

The model choice then becomes important.

Recraft’s V4.1 family includes standard and Pro variants, alongside Vector and Utility variants. The standard models target everyday generation and iteration, while Pro models offer substantially larger native resolutions for print-oriented and large-format work. The Vector variants are designed for SVG output rather than ordinary raster images.

Recraft has also expanded beyond its own image models. Its 2026 Studio updates added models such as Seedream 5.0 Pro, Gemini-based video generation and Seedance 2.5. Seedance 2.5 can generate video clips of up to 30 seconds, although this is an extension of the platform rather than the reason most people would choose Recraft in the first place.

The Vector Workflow Is the Real Selling Point

The strongest case for Recraft remains vector design.

Its vector models generate SVG artwork that can be edited rather than simply giving users a raster image that must be traced afterward. The platform also provides vectorization for converting suitable PNG or JPG artwork into SVG, with controls for reducing colors and refining the resulting paths.

The July 2026 Vector Editor update makes that workflow more practical. Users can double-click generated shapes, move anchor points, adjust curves, recolor individual elements and duplicate components directly in Recraft Studio. That removes a common handoff: generate in an AI service, export an SVG, open it in Figma or Illustrator, make one tiny adjustment, then export again.

This does not mean every generated vector will be production-perfect. Complex imagery still needs human cleanup, and vectorization works better on simpler graphics than on heavily textured or photorealistic material.

Still, the editable-vector approach gives Recraft a meaningful distinction from raster-first competitors.

Where Recraft Fits Into an Actual Design Stack

Recraft does not have to replace the design applications a team already uses.

The Figma plugin can generate raster images and editable SVG vectors directly inside a Figma file. The Framer plugin provides a similar workflow for websites and landing pages. Recraft also offers Google Docs and Google Slides integrations, plus a Chrome extension that can generate or edit images from the browser and send results into supported Google products.

That integration strategy is useful because AI image generation becomes less disruptive when it happens where the work already lives.

For a web designer, that can mean generating an illustration without leaving Figma or Framer. For a marketer, it can mean creating an image directly inside a presentation or document. For a developer, the API offers programmatic image and vector generation, editing, background removal and related operations.

The API is also worth separating from the normal subscription. Recraft sells API Units independently, with prepaid units that do not expire. The documented API pricing currently starts at $1 for 1,000 API Units, while individual operations have different unit costs.

The Free Plan Is Useful, But Not a Commercial Workspace

Recraft has a genuine free tier, but there is an important distinction between “free to experiment with” and “free to use for client work.”

Free users receive 30 credits per day. The free plan supports image and vector generation and basic editing, but generated images are publicly visible and are owned by Recraft rather than the user. Recraft’s documentation states that free-plan images are not licensed for commercial use.

Paid plans change the rights situation. Recraft says paid subscribers retain full ownership and commercial rights over assets generated while subscribed, and those assets remain private even after the subscription ends.

That makes the free tier best viewed as a learning and evaluation environment. Anyone creating client deliverables, commercial brand assets or products should account for the paid requirement rather than treating the free credits as a production plan.

Pricing Makes More Sense When You Think in Credits

Recraft uses credits instead of a simple unlimited-generation model. The current official documentation lists Basic at $12 per month when billed monthly, or $10 per month when billed annually for 1,000 credits. Pro starts at $20 monthly for 2,000 credits and scales through larger 4,000, 8,000 and 16,000-credit options. Teams have separate pricing and collaboration features.

The credit system is relatively transparent for core operations. A raster generation typically costs one credit, a vector generation two, vectorization one, mockup generation two, and creative upscaling 20 credits. Subscription credits reset with the billing cycle and do not roll over, while purchased top-up credits do not expire.

That structure rewards users who understand their workflow. Someone producing occasional social graphics may be comfortable on a smaller plan. A designer iterating heavily on vectors, mockups and high-resolution assets can consume credits much faster.

There is another wrinkle: Recraft’s terms say prices, promotions, credit allowances and some features can vary as the company tests different offers. That is another reason to confirm the live pricing page before purchasing rather than relying on an old review.

Is Recraft Worth Considering in 2026?

Recraft makes the most sense when the output needs to behave like design material rather than a disposable AI picture.

Its strongest argument is the combination of native vector generation, vector editing, reusable visual direction and integrations with tools such as Figma and Framer. The platform has also continued to expand quickly: 2026 brought V4, V4.1, a dedicated Vector Editor, additional external models, video generation and a Design Agent that can produce coordinated brand assets such as logos, palettes, typography and icons.

The limitations are just as important. Recraft’s credit model requires attention, free outputs are unsuitable for commercial use, and the platform is still more specialized than an all-purpose creative suite. Someone primarily looking for cinematic AI artwork may prefer a different generator, while a professional designer will still want conventional tools for final art direction and exact production control.

For designers and brand teams, however, Recraft occupies a useful position. It is less about replacing the entire design stack and more about making the generative part of that stack substantially more editable and reusable.

Quick Answer

Recraft is a design-oriented AI generation platform that creates raster images, editable SVG vectors, mockups and other visual assets. It is particularly useful for designers and marketers who need consistent graphics rather than one-off AI artwork. The strongest differentiator is its native vector workflow, including editable SVG generation and in-app vector editing. Recraft has a free plan with 30 daily credits, but free outputs are public, owned by Recraft and not licensed for commercial use. Paid plans begin at $12 monthly, with annual Basic billing equivalent to $10 per month.

Where Recraft Could Improve

  • Make credit consumption easier to forecast for multi-step editing and agentic workflows.
  • Give users more granular controls for protecting credits during repeated iterations.
  • Continue improving complex vector cleanup so fewer generated assets need manual refinement.
  • Make plan differences and annual-versus-monthly pricing even clearer at the point of purchase.
  • Expand collaboration and asset-management features for larger design teams.
  • Continue strengthening the bridge between generated assets and full production design workflows.

A Strong Choice for Design-First AI Generation

Recraft is worth considering if your AI image workflow ends with an actual design asset rather than a picture that simply looks good on screen. Its native SVG generation, vector editing, brand-oriented controls and integrations with Figma and Framer make it particularly relevant to designers, marketers, agencies and product teams. The platform is also becoming broader, with video generation and external models appearing alongside its core image and vector tools.

The biggest catch is the credit system. Subscription credits reset each billing cycle, so heavy iteration can consume a plan faster than the headline credit number suggests. The free tier is useful for learning the product, but its public ownership and non-commercial licensing make it unsuitable for serious client or business work.
For general AI art, other generators may be more compelling. For editable visual assets, especially vectors and brand graphics, Recraft deserves a place on the shortlist.
